Knee Replacement

Knee Replacement Surgery: What You Need to Know

Knee replacement surgery can be a very effective solution for my end-stage arthritis patients who suffer from knee pain and can no longer continue their daily life because of this pain. Especially when the articular cartilage is worn out and knee movements are restricted, this surgical procedure can significantly improve the quality of life of the person. Let’s take a look at frequently asked questions about this surgery and what you need to know.

What is a knee replacement and why is it performed?

Knee replacement is the process of removing the worn and damaged parts of the knee joint and replacing it with an artificial joint. It is usually performed when the knee joint can no longer function due to osteoarthritis (calcification), rheumatoid arthritis or trauma-related arthritis. The aim of the operation is to reduce pain and restore your mobility.

Who is it suitable for?

If you are facing the following problems, knee replacement may be suitable for you:

  • Severe pain: If you have pain when walking, climbing stairs or even at rest.
  • Limitation of movement: If you are unable to perform your daily activities due to stiffness in your knee.
  • If other treatments have not worked: If medication, physiotherapy or injections no longer relieve your pain.

Surgery Process

This surgery requires a detailed preparation process. Firstly, I will examine you and assess the condition of your knee joint using X-rays and the necessary tests. During the operation, the damaged parts of the knee are removed and replaced with an artificial joint made of metal or plastic. The operation usually takes 1 hour.

How is life after surgery?

The patient is allowed to walk within the first 24 hours after the operation. He can climb up and down stairs. You need to stay in hospital for 2-3 days. Although the healing process varies from person to person, it usually takes 3-6 weeks. Regular exercise and movement ensures that your prosthesis works in the best way.

I would like to add the following: When you return to daily life, you will be incredibly happy that your pain will decrease and your mobility will increase. Most of my patients give feedback after the surgery in the form of ‘I wish I had it done earlier’, ‘I waited for so long in vain’.

Are There Risks of Surgery?

Yes, as in every surgery, there may be some risks here. However, these are very rare. Situations such as infection, blood clot formation or loosening of the prosthesis are carefully controlled. Therefore, it is very important to follow your doctor’s recommendations exactly in the postoperative period.

Knee replacement surgery is a great option for a pain-free and more mobile life. However, it may not be suitable for every patient. If your knee pain is seriously affecting your life, get your treatment without delay. Remember, regaining your freedom of movement may be closer than you think! 😊
